About Paul
With a strong belief in community and experience in local government, Paul Schemel was elected in 2014 to serve the people of the 90th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

For the 2017-18 session, Paul is serving on the following four House committees: Aging and Older Adult Services, Health, Judiciary and Local Government.

Paul is a firm believer in limited government and seeks opportunities to ease the burden of state regulations on farmers and business owners. He works to ensure that state government is fiscally responsible and lives within its means, as required by the state constitution. Toward that end, Paul has refused to accept a state pension, a state car and per diems.

During his first term in office, Paul’s legislative priorities include enacting property tax reform, resolving the Commonwealth’s public pension crisis and fixing the public welfare system. Paul is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and the equal dignity of the unborn.

Prior to his election to the House, Paul served six years on Greencastle Borough Council. As chairman of the public safety committee, Paul was instrumental in the hiring of a new police chief and the negotiation of two contracts with the police union. Paul also served a portion of his term as council vice president and was an active member of the finance committee.

Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and a Master of Business Administration in contract management from the University of Dallas in Texas, a Juris Doctor from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., and an international diploma in restorative justice from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., Canada. After graduating from law school in 1999, Paul worked for the law firm now known as Dick, Stein, Schemel, Wine & Frey, LLP, which has offices in Waynesboro and Greencastle.

In 2008-09, Paul volunteered to serve a one-year U.S. State Department appointment in Iraq as an advisor on local government. Paul was assigned to a detachment of Marines working in an active hostile zone near the Syrian border. Paul’s mission was to assist in stabilizing the Iraqi government and tribal systems to the point where U.S. forces could withdraw.

Throughout his career, Paul has been an active supporter of his community. He is currently an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 99, Greencastle, and serves on the boards of directors of both Summit Health and the Waynesboro Hospital.

Paul and his wife, Lucy, live in Greencastle and have six children: Caroline, Billy, Peter, Jack, Tommy and Monica. The family belongs to St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Greencastle, where they are active members. With the exception of those who have graduated, all of the children attend public school.
